The Picasso Problem

Biographies reveal a darker side to Picasso, the celebrated father of cubism. Whilst his portraits of fragmented women catapulted him to fame and fortune, the models who posed for these paintings report manipulative, degrading and abusive treatment at his hand. The dismembered fragmentation at the heart of his representations of the female form in many of his most famous images, could reflect his failure to see some of woman he worked with as complete and whole people. These photographs were created in response to the imbalance in the original artworks. The colour palate draws from the blue period and rose periods in Picasso’s journey, but in these images fragmentation is projected onto the complete female form, which remains intact.
